WHO ARE WE?
West Country Law is a specialised set of Barristers and other legal professionals. It was set up to provide a "one stop legal shop" to members of the public and to give them quick and cost effective access to expert legal advice without needing to speak to a solicitor first.
SPECIALIST LAWYERS
The term Lawyer is a generic term used to describe anyone who is a Licensed Legal Practitioner qualified to give legal advice in one or more areas of law. Put simply, Solicitors and Barristers are both types of Lawyer.
Solicitors deal with all paperwork and communication involved with their clients cases, such as writing documents, letters and contracts tailored to their clients needs; ensuring the accuracy of legal advice and procedure, and preparing papers for court.
Solicitors will also negotiate with clients and opposing parties to secure agreed objectives, gather evidence, supervise the implementation of agreements, calculate claims for damages, compensation, loss of earnings, maintenance etc., and Co-ordinate the work of all parties involved in the case.
Direct Access Barristers can however now undertake much of the work that Solicitors have traditionally carried out.
Barristers can be distinguished from a solicitor because (generally) they wear a wig and gown in court. They work at higher levels of court than solicitors and their main role is to act as advocates in legal hearings, which means they stand out in court and plead the case on behalf of their clients in front of a judge.
